The Original Great Seal of California

Designed and authorized by the first California Congress

Research by members of the California state republic trust found the following announcement and rendering of the Great Seal of California. This historical reference from 1849 has been used to create seals for use by the acting California state republic Board of Trustees.

The original Great Seal was damaged in 1858 and a bill was introduced to the Senate directing the Secretary of State to procure a new seal made of steel. There was quite a bit of back and forth, with a variety of amendments on the size of the seal and its details; the size was made smaller and then returned to the original size, as one example.  For our purposes. the acting board of trustees elected to use the original seal design that represents the spirit of standing up the original 1849 republic.

Acting trustees have a very narrow scope of business they can conduct while holding the offices open; seals are primarily used for the purpose of recording documents and acting from necessity.
